New Delhi [India], November 11 (ANI): Wishes poured in from across party lines for Justice Sanjiv Khanna as he took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) earlier in the day in a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was among the first leaders to extend his greetings to Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
In a post on X, he said, "Extending best wishes to Justice Sanjiv Khanna for taking oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India."
He further noted in his post that the position of the Chief Justice of India would undoubtedly place a lot of weight on his shoulders due to the extensive scrutiny and expectations that the office brings with it.
"I am sure with his long and distinguished experience, he will be able to bear the weight of this responsibility and serve the Judiciary with distinction," he added.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also Congratulated Justice Sanjiv Khanna on this occasion.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Justice Sanjiv Khanna on his swearing-in as the Chief Justice of India," he wrote in a post on X.
"Wishing him an impactful tenure and may his work further strengthen the foundations of our democracy, uphold equality, and strengthen the rights of every citizen of our nation," the Delhi Chief Minister added.
Congratulating Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in a post on X wrote, "Warmest congratulations to Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna on being sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. We look forward to his continued contributions toward shaping an equitable and fair legal system for all. May this new role bring wisdom, strength and success as he leads the nation's highest court with integrity and insight."
Justice Khanna has been part of benches in the Supreme Court that heard important judgments including upholding the abrogation of Article 370.
CJI Khanna was also part of the bench that scrapped the electoral bonds scheme passed in the Parliament earlier.
Khanna took the oath in English, in the name of God, bearing his allegiance to the Constitution of India ensuring that he will perform the duties of his office without fear or favour, affection or ill will.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal among several other Union Cabinet ministers. (ANI)
