Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 29 (ANI): Ahead of the Vice Presidential elections on September 9, Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday stated that the party would vote unanimously in favour of the INDIA bloc candidate.
Addressing a press conference, Thackeray further stated that his party was still unaware as to why the former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar had resigned all of a sudden.
"We will vote unanimously in favour of the INDIA bloc candidate... The upcoming elections are important for the country because we have to vote to maintain the dignity of the post of Vice President. We need a suitable person for that post. We dont know what happened to the former Vice President that he had to suddenly resign... " Thackeray told while addressing the media.
The INDIA bloc has picked the former Supreme Court Judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy as it's candidate for the Vice Presidential elections.
The announcement was made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in the national capital following the INDIA bloc meeting.
A day earlier, VCK Founder-president Thol Thirumavalavan slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for "forcing" the Vice President Dhankar to resign, an action which he claimed has created "crisis" in the country.
He also urged all members of Parliament from the Opposition parties to vote for INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee, former Supreme Court Judge B Sudershan Reddy.
"The BJP has forced the Vice President elections on us. They have already forced the Vice President to resign. No one knows his condition yet...It is shocking that such a crisis has been created in our country by the BJP and RSS," Thirumavalavan told reporters in Viluppuram on Wednesday.
"Someone with the right understanding and courage is needed to protect the Constitution. Therefore, all members of Parliament from the democratic forces should vote for the INDIA alliance's VP candidate, B. Sudershan Reddy. We request that the votes of the opposition parties should not be scattered," he added.
The election for the Vice President of India will feature a direct contest between Justice Reddy and the NDA's nominee, C P Radhakrishnan. (ANI)
