Balasore (Odisha) [India], July 16 (ANI): Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi extended condolences on the death of Odisha's Balasore self-immolation victim and ensured that justice will be delivered, informed the victim's father on Wednesday.
The father of the victim, while talking to ANI, spoke about the conversation he had with the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and said, "Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke to me this morning and expressed grief over my daughter's death."
He further added, "He enquired about the incident. He assured me that he is with me in the fight to get justice for my daughter. He told me that the whole country is with us and assured me that he will provide all possible help. I will fight till my last breath to ensure justice for my daughter. The strictest law should be made against those who commit such crimes."
The Balsore self-immolation case has received widespread criticism from Opposition parties as well as the nation.
Earlier, Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das on Wednesday strongly condemned the handling of the Balasore student self-immolation case, saying that if action is not taken by early tomorrow, then this movement will take another shape.
"We are waiting till tomorrow's closure. After that, we will increase the movement very hard. This is not going to calm down here. Action should be taken by early tomorrow; otherwise, the day after tomorrow, this movement will take another shape," Das told ANI.
Das later said that the girl had been fighting for justice for six months, and her attempts were but no one listened.
The 20-year-old student set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her Head of Department at college. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College.
On Monday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar confirmed the death of the student. (ANI)
