Darjeeling (West Bengal) [India], August 25 (ANI): A torchlight protest was held in Siliguri on Sunday, demanding justice for the victim of the Kolkata woman doctor's rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College.
One protestor told ANI, "If justice is not served now, we may never receive it."
"This torch symbolises the fire burning in our hearts. This fire will only be extinguished when the victim receives justice. As long as we do not get justice, the fire in everyone's hearts will continue to burn like this torch. If we do not receive justice now, we may never receive it," she told ANI.
In Bhangore, South 24 Parganas, local women also staged a protest, demanding justice for the rape-murder victim. Additionally, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) held a protest in Bhangore, joining the call for justice.
In Kolkata, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and BJP workers protested at Shyambazar, voicing their concerns over the case.
Earlier today, CBI officials conducted a polygraph test on the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the case.
In a related development, Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar in West Bengal, who was honoured with the Banga Ratna award by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, has decided to return the award in protest against the state government's response to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident.
Speaking to ANI about his decision, Parimal said, "I have decided to return the Banga Ratna award. Given the protests in Bengal and beyond, my conscience compels me to return it. I support the protest. The way she (Mamata Banerjee) is running the administration is not right."
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered that security for Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. (ANI)
