WB: Police arrest "professor" who sent threat letter to Jadavpur University Registrar

JU registrar Snehamanju Basu recently received a threat letter over the arrest of a former student in connection with the death of an undergraduate student in a ragging case at the university hostel.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 4 (ANI): Kolkata Police arrested one Rana Roy on Sunday who recently sent a threat letter to Jadavpur University Registrar Snehamanju Basu.

Roy was arrested from a hotel in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar, an official said. 

JU registrar Snehamanju Basu recently received a threat letter over the arrest of a former student in connection with the death of an undergraduate student in a ragging case at the university hostel.

However, Rana Roy was arrested in a different case. According to the police, the arrest was made on the basis of a written complaint made by a woman from Kolkata's Belgachia area.

According to the police officials, “The woman in her complaint has alleged that from 2019 until August 2023, the accused person (Rana Roy) stalked the complainant lady, made indecent gestures by exhibiting his private parts, insulted her modesty by hurling filthy expletives at her, proposed to her indecently by sending her a letter, and finally outraged her modesty on August 17, 2023, by hugging her with malafide intention inside the LIG Housing. Moreover, the complainant made an allegation of impersonation and cheating against the accused person, who, by exhibiting a board written "WBES Gr-A, Govt of West Bengal, By Order" in his private car, impersonated himself as a superior officer of the State government.”

As per sources, Rana Roy is a professor at a college in Cooch Behar.

As per the police, the accused Prof. Rana Roy also allegedly cheated vendors and other poor people by not paying them against the purchase and used, cumulatively, which amounts to Rs. 62,000. 

The police have registered a case under sections 354/354A(1)(ii)/354D/419/420/506 IPC against Rana Roy, officials said. 

According to police officials, this is not the first time, a criminal case has been registered against the accused, Rana Roy

Earlier in 2019, a molestation case was registered against him at Tala Police Station in Case No. 113/19 dt. 02.11.2019 u/s 323 /354 /509 /506 / 114 IPC, where he was charge-sheeted as absconding, the officials said. 

Later, by virtue of a warrant of Arrest issued by the Court of Ld ACJM, Sealdah was arrested on February 23, 2010, from LIG Housing and produced before the Ld Court, where the Ld Court was pleased to enlarge him on bail, they said. 

The said case is presently awaiting trial before the Court of Ld ACJM, Sealdah, an official added. (ANI)
