Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India] September 22 (ANI): After continuous rise in water levels of Ganga for past few days due to heavy rainfall, finally the water level has begun to decline leaving silt on Varanasi ghats, causing significant difficulties for tourist in Varanasi.
The gradual decline in the water levels has led to accumulation of mud, dirt and silt. The cleaning efforts are underway, however, the slow decline is hindering proper sanitation of the ghats.
Jai Kumar Sahni, a local, speaking with ANI, said, "The water lelver of Maa Ganga is declining and the silt has accumulated on the ghats. The tourist are coming but they are unable to go on the ghats because of the mud, causing a lot of trouble."
Another local Sudhir Singh requested to the municipal corporation to clean the ghats.
"The water level of river Ganga has declined leaving mud behind. I request the municipal corporation to immediately take action and maintain the cleanliness at the ghats," Singh said.
Similarly, the water level in Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj has also come down, resulting in silt and mud filling in the areas once submerged.
Water level in Ganga had surged due to continuous rainfall in the mountains and active monsoon showers in the plains.
Water had entered the settlements in the lower areas of Prayagraj, forcing people to evacuate their homes. Baghada, Salori and Rajapur were some of the worst affected areas. At the same time in Ayodhya, the water level of the Saryu River had crossed the danger mark in the hilly areas. (ANI)
