New Delhi [India]], July 29 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal on Monday gave a notice for suspension of business in the Rajya Sabha to discuss the deaths of three UPSC aspirants and sought "justice and compensation" for the families of the victims.
On Saturday, July 27, three UPSC aspirants died after the basement of their coaching centre in West Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded with water.
"I have filed notice today for suspension of business of Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 for discussion on the pertinent issue before the nation - justice and compensation for the 4 UPSC aspirants who have died in Patel Nagar and Rajinder Nagar. Voice of the students will not go unheard," Maliwal posted on X.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP workers and leaders protested against the AAP government in Delhi, near the AAP Office, over the Old Rajinder Nagar incident.
Earlier, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in Delhi High Court, seeking the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the Rajinder Nagar incident in which three people lost their lives.
The plea also sought directions for an investigation into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers who allegedly failed to act on a complaint received on June 26, 2024.
The plea also sought direction to constitute district-level committees in each district of Delhi to investigate and address illegal commercial construction.
The Delhi Police arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre in connection with the incident and booked them of culpable homicide among other charges.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi yesterday sealed seven properties and three basements for violating building by-laws in Karol Bagh Zone.
Following the tragedy, students staged protests, demanding justice from the government and action against illegally used basements. The incident has ignited a political blame game among parties. (ANI)
