New Delhi [India], April 7 (ANI): The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed strong condemnation over the murder of a woman in Noida, reportedly killed by her husband in a fit of rage over suspected infidelity.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has urged local authorities to take immediate action and instructed the police to arrest the accused without delay.
An FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been filed, and the Commission has demanded a thorough and fair investigation.
Rahatkar has emphasised that the case must be handled expeditiously, with a status report (ATR) to be submitted within the next three days.
Taking to its handle on X, NCW posted, "NCW strongly condemns the brutal murder of a woman in Noida, reportedly killed by her husband with a hammer over suspicion of an affair. Such horrific violence has no justification. Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed the Police for an immediate arrest of the accused, Fan IR under BNS, and a time-bound, fair investigation. ATR to be submitted within 3 days."
The NCW has consistently called for stricter laws and quicker enforcement to protect women from such brutal acts of violence.
Earlier last month, NCW welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to stay the controversial judgment of the Allahabad High Court.
This came after the Allahabad High Court had had held that grabbing a minor girl, breaking the string of her pyjamas, and attempting to drag her into a culvert would not amount to attempt to rape, according to the press statement.
The Supreme Court bench took suo motu cognisance of the High Court's ruling, which had sparked significant public outrage. The bench expressed strong disagreement with the High Court's view, describing the order as "shocking."
As per the NCW press statement, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar discussed the matter with Minister of State for the Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal.
The judgment showed "lack of sensitivity" on the part of the Allahabad High Court judge, said the Supreme Court earlier, as it stayed the ruling.
A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih said that it is a "serious matter" and "total insensitiveness" on the part of the judge who passed the judgment.
"It is a serious matter. Total insensitiveness on the part of the judge. This was at the stage of issuing summons. We are sorry to use such harsh words against the judge," said Justice Gavai.
The apex court had taken suo motu cognisance of the issue after senior advocate Shobha Gupta, through the organisation 'We the Women of India', brought to the notice of the Chief Justice of India the March 17 order of the Allahabad High Court. (ANI)
