Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], Feb 10 (ANI): The Telangana government has suspended Syed Umar Jaleel, the Collector of Vikarabad who is accused of "poll rigging".
The state government acted after the Election Commission ordered it to put the Collector under suspension.
Jaleel allegedly opened the strong room containing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and cleared poll data from some EVMs of an assembly constituency.
Following this, Congress leaders filed an Election Petition in the High Court stating that irregularities in EVMs occurred during the elections.
The ECI took a serious note and considered this as a violation of the extant rules and instructions of the election commission and directed the Telangana government to suspend Jaleel.
Earlier, the ECI had directed officials for every voting machine used in an election to kept in the custody of the District Election Officer. It shall be untouched under the standard protocol of security till confirmation of EP (Election Petition) position from the High Court concerned after the completion of the period for filing election petition - 45 days from the date of declaration of the result.
Further, the EC said if any EP filed in the respect of any assembly constituency, EVMs used at all polling stations in the constituency concerned shall be kept in safe custody of the district election officer till such time as the election petition is finally disposed off by the court or the EVMs are freed from the EP by an express order of the competent court.
"Vikarabad Collector Syed Umar Jaleel has opened the strong room in which EVMs were kept which were used in the elections and which should not be opened when an election petition is pending in the High Court. On which Election Commission of India has took a serious note and ordered Telangana Government to place Syed Umar Jaleel, IAS, Vikarabad Collector under suspension. Yesterday he was suspended by the Telangana government on the orders given by ECI," Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana, Rajat Kumar, told ANI. (ANI)
