Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 2 (ANI): Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President and Assam Minister Atul Bora said that all party workers are working hard for the upcoming 2026 Assam assembly elections. He added that he is very happy to see their enthusiasm.
While speaking to ANI on Friday, Cabinet Minister Bora said, "The 2026 assembly elections are approaching and all party workers are working hard...Today, I attended the extended central executive meetings of Assam Mahila Parishad (AMP) and Assam Chhatra Parishad (ACP)...I am very happy to see the enthusiasm among the party workers...".
The number of constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly is 126.
The Legislative Assembly elections are set to be held in Assam from March to April 2026, electing 126 members of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly, which was elected in 2021, will end in May 2026.
Earlier on July 11, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) announced that it will contest in 35 out of 126 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam told ANI that the party has decided to go solo this time in the elections.
"... We will fight in 35 seats, and we will go solo this time. Recently, our party MLAs discussed this with our party chief, Badruddin Ajmal. We are preparing for the upcoming assembly polls... All opposition parties should jointly fight against the BJP... Congress or any other party does not have that kind of support to defeat the BJP alone... If Congress thinks of an alliance in the state, AIUDF will definitely consider it," Islam said.
When asked about a possible alliance with the Congress, Islam said that the party will definitely consider it.
"Right now, we are not thinking of any alliance. But all opposition parties should unite to take on the BJP," he added.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the AIUDF had joined hands with the Congress, BPF, and Left parties to form a grand alliance.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to contest "vigorously" in the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, with a strong focus on peace, development, and self-governance in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), according to Assam BJP's Chief Spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay.
Speaking to ANI on Friday, Upadhyay said, "We are serious about BTR elections. There was unrest in BTR before. But now, the atmosphere is different, peaceful, and open for election participation."
The BTC elections are likely to be held in the month of September this year. The Chief Minister will address rallies in Udalguri district on August 2.
On July 22, the Assam State Election Commission published the draft voter list for 40 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) constituencies containing 26.69 lakh voters.
A total of 26,69,396 voters include 13,29,742 male voters, 13,39,637 female voters, and 17 others included in the draft electoral rolls. (ANI)
