"UCC will be implemented before State Foundation Day": Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], August 4 (ANI): The Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, on Sunday announced the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state before State Foundation Day on November 9.
The Uttarakhand government introduced the UCC Bill on February 6, this year. On February 7, the bill was passed in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, marking a "historic day in the history of Uttarakhand as per Dhami.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was passed with a comfortable majority during a special session of the Uttarakhand assembly on February 7, which was tabled by CM Dhami.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was a proposal in India to establish uniform rules for personal matters for all citizens. These matters include marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights. The UCC would apply to all citizens equally, regardless of their religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
Earlier on February 29, Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh referred the bill sent by the state government to President Murmu for her approval.
President Droupadi Murmu approved Uttarakhand's Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2024, on March 13, making Uttarakhand the first state in the country to implement the UCC.
Dhami further spoke about the work being done in balancing both development and environment and the state moving towards the direction of Gross Environment Product (GEP).
"Work is being done in the state by balancing development and environment. The state has moved forward in the direction of Gross Environment Product (GEP)," he said.
He further stated that the GEP index had been created by incorporating water, land, forest, and air.
"The GEP index has been created by incorporating water, land, forest, and air. The carrying capacity of the cities in the hilly areas of the state is being assessed; their planned development will be done according to the carrying capacity," he added. (ANI)
