"True guardian of nation": India's fisherman community lauds PM Modi's firm stand against US tariffs

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 7 (ANI): India's fishing community on Thursday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance that the government will not compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers, calling him a "true guardian" of the country.
A fisherman and member of the Management Committee of the Chennai Fishing Harbour, S Satishkumar, said, "We are extremely proud that our Prime Minister has stood firmly to protect and support us. His words are not just a reassurance to the fishermen but also to the farmers across the nation... PM Modi is safeguarding us and the Indian coast. What he said today made us feel like he is truly with us, a leader who acts, not just speaks. He has proven himself to be the true guardian of the nation."
A fisherwoman in Kerala's Kannur said, "We heard the speech of PM Modi. We have complete faith in PM Modi."
Earlier, in a strong message against the tariffs imposed by the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that farmers remain India's top priority and that the country would never compromise the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers.
"For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it and I am ready for it. India is ready for it," PM Modi said while addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference.
His remarks come amid the Trump administration doubling the tariff imposition to 50 per cent on goods from India. During trade negotiations, the United States was pushing for greater access to India's agricultural market, especially for corn, soybeans, and cotton.
However, India has so far resisted the opening of the agricultural sector and dairy products due to concerns about domestic livelihoods and potential impacts on farmers.
Slamming the United States' move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday declared that New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests."
In an official statement, the MEA said, "The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India."
"It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest," the statement added.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India.
According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. After the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 per cent. While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported into the US, except for goods already in transit or those meeting specific exemptions.
The Executive Order also allows for modifications based on changing circumstances, including potential retaliation by other countries or steps taken by Russia or India to address the national emergency. (ANI)
