Agartala (Tripura) [India], May 27 (ANI): In a significant development in the alleged Tripura child-selling case, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday sought a detailed report from the Dhalai District Magistrate into the matter.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the State Ayurvedic Hospital at Agartala, CM Saha said, "I have asked for a detailed report on the matter from the District Magistrate. The DM has submitted the initial report."
He further said, "I am aware of the incident. All efforts are being made to provide help to the family. DM and SDM are continuously monitoring the matter."
Dismissing the allegations levelled by the opposition, he said, "The day I received the information, I inquired about the matter immediately. The baby was handed over to the family on the same day. When the Opposition parties were in power, such incidents occurred very frequently. But now, the numbers have significantly reduced."
"Our government has spent 10 per cent more money than the usual budget in Dhalai, the place where this incident happened. Multiple social problems need to be addressed. We are making efforts to reduce the number of such incidents," CM Saha told reporters.
The Tripura administration was rocked by the report on the alleged selling of a child due to poverty on Friday. The woman gave birth to the baby on Thursday and she sold the baby to a couple for Rs 5,000 on the next day.
Leader of the opposition and CPI (M) state committee secretary, Jitendra Chaudhury informed the Chief Secretary about the incident. Following this, the baby was rescued and reunited with the mother.
He held the BJP government responsible for the situation, saying that the government should ensure basic amenities for poor families.
"The government should make sure poor people can get all the help so that they can survive amid the rural distress prevalent in the state in the form of scarce work and food for life," said Choudhary.
"I appeal to the administration to go to the interior pockets and resolve their problems," he added. (ANI)
