Agartala (Tripura) [India], May 16 (ANI): In a compelling display of civic responsibility, Tripura's Chief Minister, Dr Manik Saha on Thursday attended a blood donation camp organised by Ward No. 39 of the Agartala Municipal Corporation.
Joined by Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder and 39-Ward Corporator Alak Roy, the event underscored the paramount significance of voluntary blood donation in preserving lives.
Addressing the assembly, Dr Saha illuminated the profound yet understated impact of blood donation, illustrating how a solitary unit of blood can profoundly effect the life of a critically ill patient. He commended the selflessness of many donors who stepped forward, particularly acknowledging the resurgence of blood donation drives following the conclusion of two phases of the Lok Sabha Election in Tripura.
Dr Saha delineated the indispensable role of blood banks in ensuring a consistent supply of blood units for hospitalised patients, accentuating the societal and medical importance of such donation endeavours. He fervently reiterated that blood transcends religion, caste, and community barriers, serving as a unifying catalyst that fosters harmony and solidarity among all strata of society.
Moreover, Dr Saha lauded and encouraged the participation of female donors, recognising their pivotal contribution to the cause. With Tripura's population hovering around 4 million, he estimated that approximately 40 thousand units of blood are required to adequately cater to the region's demands, underscoring the perpetual necessity for collective action in ameliorating this critical need.
The event not only highlighted the significance of blood donation but also served as a testament to the importance of community involvement and unity in addressing vital healthcare challenges. Dr Saha's impassioned advocacy for blood donation underscored Tripura's unwavering commitment to advancing public health and welfare across the state.

While speaking to ANI, CM Manik Saha said, "In Tripura, we have 14 blood banks and 6 blood component separation centres. Blood banks have been facing shortages due to the hiatus during the elections, when no blood donation camps were organised. I continually implore all Tripura residents, especially the youth, to step forward and proudly donate blood after such intervals."
He further highlighted, "It's crucial to maintain a ratio of at least 1 per cent between blood stock and population. With Tripura's population at approximately 4 million, we require a blood storage capacity of at least 40,000 units. Last year, our stock approached this threshold, and this year, we are striving to achieve the same. Given the gap during the elections, I urge everyone to contribute to diminishing blood scarcity through voluntary donations." (ANI)
