Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 5 (ANI): Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and Member of Parliament Thol. Thirumavalavan strongly reiterated the need for special legislation to prevent the increasing number of "honour killings" in Tamil Nadu and other states across India.
"We have been continuously demanding a special law to curb honour killings. We've raised the issue in Parliament as well. Democratic forces are consistently voicing against caste- and religion-based murders happening across the country, but the Union government is indifferent. Even the Supreme Court has instructed that a special law be enacted, and in the meantime, has issued guidelines to the police for preventive measures. Unfortunately, no state police force is following those guidelines," Thirumavalavan said, addressing media personnel at the airport.
He further announced that the VCK will organise protests on August 9 and 11, demanding the enactment of a special law and added, "I will personally participate in the August 9 protest in Chennai. Tamil Nadu should set an example for other states by implementing such a law first."
When asked about Union Minister Kiren Rijiju's recent statement that bills would be passed without debate if opposition parties continue to disrupt proceedings, Thirumavalavan responded, "The Election Commission is now carrying out a special voter roll revision process. However, there are many irregularities, and it seems these changes are being made in favour of the BJP. We've demanded a detailed discussion in Parliament, but the Union government is hesitant. The Election Commission is acting in a biased manner, supporting the BJP, which is anti-democratic. Even in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the EC appeared to favour the BJP. It is now functioning under the BJP's control, which is dangerous for our democracy."
He urged the Tamil Nadu government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.
He also addressed the chain-snatching incident involving Congress MP R Sudha in a high-security diplomatic zone in the national capital..
He said, "This is shocking and damages the country's global image. MP Sudha has stated that the Delhi Police are not taking it seriously. Appropriate action must be taken."
Speaking about the NDA alliance, he noted, "The National Democratic Alliance is still not fully formed. Only the BJP and AIADMK are currently in it. Some claimed that parties would exit the DMK alliance, but in reality, it is those who were expected to stay with the NDA who are leaving. That shows how fragile the NDA is."
On rumours that some DMK alliance MPs are being offered ministerial positions by the BJP, he clarified, saying, "I have not received any such invitation." (ANI)
