New Delhi [India], September 21 (ANI): After the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in both the Houses, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Thursday said that the Union government wanted to dedicate the new parliament building to women. The bill has not been passed from the point of view of elections but rather to give respect to women.
Rajya Sabha passed Women's Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) with 214 MPs voting in favour and none voting against.
The Union Minister said, "After the inauguration of the new Parliament building, we wanted to dedicate this building to women...This will be a historical building...To introduce this bill on Ganesh Chaturthi was the government's decision...This is not from the point of view of elections... This is for giving respect to women."
Reddy attacked the Congress saying "What the Congress government was not able to do in 60 years is happening under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. He also congratulated everyone on this occasion.
After hours of fierce debate, the Lok Sabha passed the Women's Reservation Bill with 454 votes which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed after a reply by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
In a historic move, the Vice-President and the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday reconstituted the panel of vice-chairpersons comprising 13 women Rajya Sabha members for the day as the house discusses the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill, 2023.
The Rajya Sabha Chairman emphasized that the presence of women MPs on the chair would send a powerful message to the world at large and it would symbolize that they held a ‘commanding position’ during this epochal moment of change. (ANI)
