New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): The constitutional amendment bills that government has brought to prevent people from holding important positions while in jail are "for show", Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury said on Wednesday, stating bills were brought overnight as Congress has hit the streets over Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
"Why did they bring the Bill overnight? Because Congress has taken to the streets. So, this is just for show, just like the Women's Bill. This is all just drama," the Congress MP told ANI.
Congress MP Manish Tewari said that these three bills are against the basic structure of the Constitution.
Constitution of India, the rule of law says that you are innocent until proven guilty...It is destructive of the basic structure of the Constitution for the simple reason that its potential for misuse of state instrumentalities is enormous," the Congress MP said.
He also said it is violation of Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha termed these bills as "draconian".
Speaking to ANI, RJD MP said, "These are draconian Bills, they have passed a lot of these Bills... There is an important, clear distinction in law between the accused and the convicted. That distinction has ended. So, they are turning into reality their concept of Opposition-free democracy."
"I alert Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, as well as others in his party - perhaps they want to target someone against them too...," he added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The bills have been referred to a Joint Committee of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025 seeks to amend section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Chief Minister or a Minister in case of arrest or detention in custody on account of serious criminal charges.
