"This is a result of failed foreign policy": Supriya Shrinate blames Modi government for 25% US tariff

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government following the announcement by US President Donald Trump of a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, calling it a consequence of a "failed foreign policy" and claiming that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had already warned of such a scenario.

New Delhi [India], July 31 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government following the announcement by US President Donald Trump of a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, calling it a consequence of a "failed foreign policy" and claiming that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had already warned of such a scenario.
Speaking in Delhi, Shrinate said, "Rahul Gandhi had already warned about this... This is going to impact our economy, exports, production and in turn, our jobs and employment. We export pharmaceuticals to the US, and with the 25% tariff, they will become expensive, resulting in decreased demand, subsequently leading to lower production and employment. This is a result of our failed foreign policy...
Referring to the Modi government's overtures to Trump during his presidency, she said, "You (ruling) gave the slogan of 'Abki baar Trump Sarkar', but he sent our people shackled, said 30 times that he declared a ceasefire... What answer does PM Modi have on this? The government must have prepared in some way for this; all the sectors will be affected by it..."
Congress MP Manickam Tagore also criticised the Centre and said India should not surrender to the US on its terms.
Speaking to ANI, Tagore asserted that Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi has been warning of the same things. "It is a failure of the government of Mr Modi. We can see from yesterday itself that LoP Rahul Gandhi has been warning of the same kind of things. He has been saying that the way we have been dealing with our foreign policy, we have fumbled it, and the EAM has failed it... We should not surrender before the Americans on their terms," the Congress MP said.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced that a 25 per cent tariff and an additional penalty would be imposed on Indian imports, starting August 1, citing high Indian tariffs and the country's trade relationship with Russia.
"Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
"Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE - ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!", the US President said. (ANI)
