Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 21 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh lauded the bill for removal of PM, CMs held on serious criminal charges and said that it will strengthen the democracy of India.
While talking to ANI, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh took a jab at all the opposition leaders for criticising the bill, and said, "Those who are scared to go to jail are worried about what would happen if this bill is passed. People engage in corrupt activities, win elections, come to power, and run the government. This creates a sentiment of disappointment in society..."
Calling the bill important, he further added, "This bill will strengthen democracy in the country... This bill is important, and it should have been brought earlier..."
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to move a motion in the Rajya Sabha today, seeking the House's concurrence to set up a Joint Committee of the Houses on three key bills. The bills pertain to amendments to the Constitution of India, the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
According to the list of business of the Rajya Sabha, the motion proposes that the Deputy Chairman nominate 10 Members of the Rajya Sabha to serve on the Joint Committee. The committee's purpose is to deliberate on the proposed amendments and provide recommendations.
Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. He also proposed sending the bills to a joint committee of Parliament.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025 seeks to amend section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Chief Minister or a Minister in case of arrest or detention in custody on account of serious criminal charges.
The bill received strong criticism from the opposition, and opposition MPs tore and threw the copies of the three Bills towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, which seek to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days.
