"There should not be such injustice...": SC lawyer Nanita Sharma on stray dog order

New Delhi [India], November 7 (ANI): Supreme Court lawyer and petitioner Nanita Sharma, on Friday, in an emotional state of mind, described the Supreme Court's order on the stray dogs from the premises of educational institutions, hospitals, bus and railway stations. The stray dogs will not be released back in the same area after sterilisation.
Nanita Sharma stated that the order passed by the apex court is quite similar to the order passed on August 11. As per the order, the stray dogs will be removed from public places, including educational institutions, government offices, bus stops, and railway stations. They will be relocated to animal shelters. A nodal officer will ensure that the strays do not return to the public properties.
"Today's order is similar to the previous order of August 11. Dogs will be removed from government Institutions, educational institutions, railway stations, and bus stops and will be relocated. A nodal officer will be appointed to ensure that they don't return to these institutions. I still have hope, and I believe in divine justice. There should not be such injustice to such voiceless animals... Relocation is a no-no under the ABC (Animal Birth Control) rules, but it has been justified with bites... What has happened today is unfortunate... The shelter houses should also be well-maintained... We are respecting the order because it is from the Supreme Court..." she said.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, while taking into consideration the "alarming rise of dog bite incidents", ordered all states and Union Territories (UTs) to ensure the removal of all stray dogs from every educational institution, hospital, public sports complexes, bus stands, railway stations, etc.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and NV Anjaria stated that all these institutions and places must be properly fenced to prevent the entry of stray dogs.
The stray dogs should not be released to the same spot from which they were picked up, the bench ordered. It also said that permitting their return would "frustrate the very purpose" of securing such premises and addressing public safety concerns.
"They will not be released back in the same area since releasing them back will frustrate the very purpose of the directive of the court," said the bench.
It will be the responsibility of the concerned local government institutions to collect stray dogs from such institutions/areas and transfer them to designated dog shelters after vaccination and sterilisation in accordance with the Animal Birth Control Rules, the bench directed. (ANI)
