New Delhi [India], Nov 9 (ANI): After centre on Friday decided to remove the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover to remove Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, former Union minister KK Tiwari said that the move is a grave threat to the security of Gandhis.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been stripped of the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover, government sources said on Friday.
The decision was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after reviewing the security cover of the three Congress leaders. The government has now decided to accord them Z+ security. CRPF personnel will now guard the members of Gandhi family
"This government doesn't want this family (Gandhi family) to survive, otherwise, it wouldn't have thought of withdrawing SPG cover knowing the fact that two former Prime Minister of India from this family were killed. This family still have threats," said KK Tiwari.
"Similar was the case with Rajiv Gandhi. His security cover was withdrawn and we saw what happened. He was assassinated. After his elimination, SPG was formed to provide security covers. Our Prime Minister always talks about dynasty, now this move is a conspiracy to wipe out," he added.
"No other units be it CRPF, CISF or ITBP can match the level of SPG. They have been trained very well and they compete with foreign security agencies in excellence" said Tiwari.
"I have asked my family to tweet the following on my behalf: The Government's decision to withdraw SPG protection for the Gandhis is an outrageous and mad decision. It is said 'Those who the gods wish to destroy, they first make them mad' " tweeted senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram.
After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the SPG Act was amended to provide security to former Prime Ministers and their immediate families for a period of 10 years from the date on which the former Prime Minister ceased to hold office. (ANI)
