New Delhi [India], Mar 6 (ANI): Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday thanked Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri for being unique in his own way.
Justice Sikri, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court who was elevated to the top court on April 12, 2013, retired today.
Addressing a gathering at the farewell, CJI Gogoi recalled how Justice Sikri during an Aadhaar judgement had said it is better to be unique than to be the best.
"I feel compelled to mention the opening words in his Aadhaar judgment - It is better to be unique than the best because being the best makes you number one, but being unique makes you the only one. Thank you Justice Sikri for being uniquely you," Gogoi said.
Lauding Justice Sikri he said, "The conduct and sensitivity displayed by Justice Sikri will continue to inspire young people."
Emphasising on how the institution grows, he added, "It is always a privilege to know a person whose thoughts help an entire institution. He is one of the finest among us. As institution grows, the goodness of the people, from the people and of the people grows."
Substantiating his remark, he said: "Good deeds and good thoughts are the basis on which institution thrives and grows. Judiciary grows on trust reposed on it by the people. Justice Sikri is one such personality who as a lawyer and as a judge brought forward insights to the institution."
Justice Sikri, who retires today, earlier withdrew consent to be appointed as the member of London-based Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT).
His decision reportedly came after some media reports linked the offer to his decision of ousting Alok Verma as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. (ANI)
