"Temporary and transitory moment": Navy Chief expresses hope "friend" Bangladesh will turn around after elections

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], November 30 (ANI): Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi on Sunday expressed optimism about Bangladesh's future, describing the current situation as a "temporary and transitory moment".
Tripathi chose to maintain a cautious stance. Amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, he emphasised India's commitment to its friendly ties with the neighbouring nation.
Speaking in Pune, Admiral Tripathi said, "I would still refrain from calling Bangladesh anything other than a friend because this could be only a temporary and transitory moment. We'll have to wait; elections have to happen, and then something else can happen..."
The situation in Bangladesh remains uncertain, with concerns about human rights, electoral reforms, and economic stability. The international community, including the United Nations, has urged a peaceful transition and respect for human rights.
He emphasised India's friendly relations with Bangladesh, stating that he's an "eternal optimist" and hopes things will improve after the country's parliamentary elections in February 2026.
He added, "I am an eternal optimist, and I hope that things will turn around as far as Bangladesh is concerned."
Admiral Tripathi's comments reflect India's diplomatic approach, prioritising friendship and cooperation with Bangladesh. The country is currently governed by an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst student-led protests.
India and Bangladesh share historical and cultural ties, and India's support for Bangladesh's development and stability is evident in its various initiatives and collaborations.
Earlier in the day, Admiral Tripathi reviewed the Passing Out Parade of the 149th Course of the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, marking the culmination of three years of military training for 329 cadets, including 20 from friendly foreign countries.
Congratulating the cadets, he said, "I see the next generation of military leaders, disciplined, determined, and ready to safeguard the peace, security, and sovereignty of India and those of our partner nations."
Quoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Navy Chief added, "Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, the path of peace also goes through power. You embody the power that safeguards peace and today's spectacular parade has reaffirmed that conviction."
He praised the cadets' turnout and performance, stating,
"Your unbridled josh, impeccable turnout, smart will, and impressive marchpast truly reflect the exemplary standards that have defined this academy for over 75 years."
Calling it an honour to review the parade as an NDA alumnus, Admiral Tripathi said, "Today's Passing Out Parade marks the culmination of your rigorous training, hard work and determination. To the 329 cadets of the passing out course, including 20 from friendly foreign countries, my heartiest congratulations to each one of you."
He also highlighted the role of women cadets in the armed forces, adding, "I am also delighted to see the second batch of women cadets graduating today, 15 of them standing shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, reaffirming that the service honours only one standard, that is merit..."
