Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], October 11 (ANI): DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Saturday said that Chief Minister MK Stalin is empowering women in the state through several women-centric schemes.
Kanimozhi, a Lok Sabha MP from Thoothukkudi, participated in the "Thaiyal Nayagi - We Mature, She Blooms" programme on Saturday, in Chennai.
Addressing a gathering here, Kanimozhi said, "It is impossible to say today that there is any village in Tamil Nadu where women are not educated. The Chief Minister has transformed the marriage assistance scheme so that no one's dreams, whether a man's or a woman's, are hindered."
Highlighting the government's initiatives, Kanimozhi said self-help groups were created to ensure that women could stand on their own feet.
"Tamil Nadu is home to some of the hardest-working women in India. While the national average of working women stands at 42 per cent, Tamil Nadu takes pride in being a state where women live independently and are self-reliant. No one disagrees that we must achieve complete equality and empowerment, but the journey toward that goal is still a long one," she said.
The event featured the distribution of free sewing machines, with hundreds of women receiving them.
"People often say, women shouldn't go out, and it's unsafe, they should dress a certain way. From today, set aside all such restrictions. Only you have the right to decide who you are and what you wear, but no one else. You must be the one to decide what you want to study, what you want to become, and what you want to do in life. Tailoring or stitching clothes is not a small or lesser profession," DMK MP said.
Asserting the importance of financial freedom for a woman, DMK MP said, "The money you earn is yours, spend it for yourself, for your family, for your happiness. You have already spent enough of your efforts and earnings on others' happiness. Use your income to build your skills and develop your talents."
DMK MP also urged women to break through "every obstacle" which comes in their path. (ANI)
