Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], October 27 (ANI): A petition filed by TVK complaining about "onerous" conditions imposed by the police for its political campaigns has been listed before the Chief Justice's Bench of the Madras High Court, the party's advocate Arivazhagan said on Monday, adding that the State government agreed before the Court that it would frame guidelines for political campaigns on or before 11th November.
"On behalf of TVK, we have filed a writ petition for seeking a direction to the DGP to grant police permission in the event of political parties making applications to the concerned police officials within the time frame by the police department," advocate Arivazhagan told ANI.
"That writ petition was pending before the single batch. As per the order of the Supreme Court, the matter was listed today before the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice has asked the State Government why it was delayed in framing the guidelines. They replied that they are taking steps to frame guidelines," he added.
The advocate said that the Court had remarked that it was the fundamental right of the political parties to conduct political rallies, political meetings.
"The Judge said that it is the fundamental right of the political parties to conduct political rallies, political meetings... On this, the state government has agreed to frame guidelines on or before 11th November 2025. In the meanwhile, the High Court has clarified that pendency of SOP, anybody can make an application to seek a meeting, the police can grant permission for political parties to organise a meeting," he said.
Meanwhile, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam spokesperson TKS Elangovan on Monday criticised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay for holding a meeting with families of victims who had died in the Karur stampede at a hotel in Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram).
Forty-one people were killed and over 50 others were injured in a stampede at a political rally held by Vijay in Karur on September 27 this year. The incident occurred at Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode Highway, after a large crowd gathered for a political rally.
Elangovan said the TVK Chief lacks the courtesy to visit and console the affected people at their residences and instead wanted to do "politics from home."
"The affected people are meeting Vijay today because they are coming to his place. Vijay has no courtesy to go to their houses and inquire about them and pacify them. Vijay's politics is different. He wants to do politics from home and does not want to go to the people," Elangovan said. (ANI)
