Tamil Nadu CM writes to PM on Cauvery issue

Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Nov 27 (ANI) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, requesting him to instruct the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation to direct the Central Water Commission (CWC) to stop further processing of the feasibility report of the Karnataka government to construct a balancing reservoir at Mekedatu across river Cauvery.
In the letter, the Chief Minister has asked Prime Minister to ensure that consent to any project on the river Cauvery should not be given without obtaining the prior concurrence of Tamil Nadu and other co-basin states.
"The proposal for the reservoir is not just for drinking water alone as claimed by Karnataka, but to increase the extent of irrigation which is in clear violation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal Award as affirmed by the Supreme Court," read the letter.
He further stated that the action of CWC has caused great alarm and apprehension among the people of Tamil Nadu as it will affect the livelihood of lakhs of farmers who depend on Cauvery water.
"I request you to kindly direct the ministry to instruct the Central Water Commission to forthwith withdraw the permission given to Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd., of Karnataka for preparation of the Detailed Project Report for Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir-cum-Drinking Water Project. I look forward to your(PM) immediate positive reply," the letter added. (ANI)
