Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 29 (ANI): Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday extended Onam greetings in Malayalam and used the occasion to send out a political exhortation.
In a video message posted on his X handle, the DMK chief urged Kerala and Tamil Nadu to “stand together to have a Union government that treats everyone equally."
"As in the reign of Mahabali we (in our country) ought to have unity and equality again. Let’s stand together to have a union government, which treats everybody equal. My heartiest Onam wishes to all dear Malayalis," he said in the video message.
Stalin's DMK is a constituent party in Opposition INDIA alliance whose third meeting is scheduled to be held over two days — on August 31 and September 1 — in Mumbai.
The 10-day Onam celebrations in Kerala started with the Atham celebrations on August 20. It is a festival that honours King Mahabali (daitya king) and Vamana (incarnation of Lord Vishnu).
Onam celebration culminates on Thiruvonam day which is being celebrated by Malayalis all over the world today.
Onam is a harvest festival, celebrated mainly by Malayalis. The date is based on the Panchangam which falls on the 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month Chingam of the Malayalam calendar, which in the Gregorian calendar falls between August-September.
Chingam is the first month according to the Malayalam calendar. The celebrations spread over 10 days mark the Malayalam New Year and conclude with Thiruvonam.
The festival is an occasion for family and friends to get together and indulge in traditional games, music and dancing. (ANI)
