Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 8 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday directed the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai to curb the drunk and drive cases, and instructed the administration to check the people driving vehicles on all the roads, squares and crowded places and initiate stringent action against those found drunk while driving.
The Chief Minister also directed the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the Police Administration to take action against the pubs and bars that are violating the norms, a press release by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said.
Underlining the need to carry on more checks at the weekend and during the night, Shinde directed the administration to take strong action and penalize those who are driving the vehicles under the influence of liquor. He also asked them to take strong action against the repeat offenders and cancel the driving licenses of such habitual vehicle drivers.
The Chief Minister directed the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and police administration to regularly check the pubs, bars and restaurants in the metropolitan city. He directed the administration to check the opening timings, rules and regulations related to noise pollution, necessary licenses of pubs, bars and restaurants and asked to initiate stringent action against those pubs, bars and restaurants that are running till late in the night and ordered to cancel their licenses.
He appealed to the Municipal Corporation and Police Administration to work in coordination to take such necessary actions.
The Chief Minister also suggested the authorities create public awareness about the adverse effects of driving under the influence of liquor. Shinde also directed the entire administrative machinery to strictly enact upon such cases for the security of people and smooth enforcement of law and order, the release said.
Notably, the directions by Shinde come after the state witnessed an accident in which a BMW car ran over two people riding a bike in Worli. The woman died in the incident and her husband was injured. The incident took place at 5:30 am on Sunday when the couple riding a bike were passing in front of the Atria Mall in Worli.
The incident in Worli follows less than two months after the Pune case in which a Porsche car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy allegedly under the influence of alcohol rammed into a motorbike resulting in the deaths of two software engineers in Pune's Kalyani Nagar area in the early hours of May 19.
