"Such incidents must not be repeated": Karnataka governor urges state govt to investigate lapses that led to Bengaluru stampede

The incident occurred on Wednesday during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL winning celebration near the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium when thousands of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite player.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 4 (ANI): Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot expressed grief over the loss of lives in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and urged the state government to investigate the lapses that may have led to the incident on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Governor Gehlot said, "Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the celebrations of RCB's IPL victory. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the swift recovery of the injured."
The Governor also expressed concern over the lapses that may have led to the stampede.
"I urge the government to thoroughly investigate the lapses that led to the tragic incident outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and ensure suitable compensation and support for the families of the deceased. Such incidents must not be repeated," the Karnataka Governor said.
The Governor has called for accountability and appropriate remedial action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL winning celebration near the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium when thousands of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite player.
Earlier, addressing a press conference, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased in the stampede.
"A major tragedy occurred during the victory celebrations. It happened near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased. The government will provide free treatment to the injured," the CM said.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, CM Siddaramaiah said, "11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident."
The Karnataka CM further asserted that he has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
"I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days' time. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came," CM Siddaramaiah said. (ANI)
