"Steps must be taken to protect environment": Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh (Assam) [India], October 30 (ANI): Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal attended a meeting on the Final Master Plan of Dibrugarh Vision 2045, organised by the Dibrugarh Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday. He called for planned measures to counter artificial flooding in Dibrugarh and emphasised the need to protect the environment.
Sonowal noted that the city's area is expected to expand to 391 square kilometres, encompassing multiple water bodies and rivers. He urged that planning be conducted in a way that safeguards these natural resources and the environment.
"In the future, the city is likely to span 391 square kilometres, including water bodies and rivers. Our planning should be meticulous, respecting such gifts of nature, as we must take all possible steps to protect the environment. The master plan of Dibrugarh should account for this to ensure sustainable development," Sonowal remarked.
The Union Minister stated that the future Dibrugarh will feature numerous water bodies within the 391-square-kilometre expanse, which must be preserved. The DDA's plan anticipates the challenges of urban development and offers solutions to support both quality of life and sustainable growth.
Addressing the gathering, Sonowal highlighted the importance of honouring Dibrugarh's rich legacy and history to build a sustainable future.
"Dibrugarh has a rich heritage and history that must be considered as we work towards sustainable development. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is advancing towards the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by 2047. With vast economic potential, Dibrugarh is on a path to becoming a modern, self-sufficient, and sustainable urban centre that offers an enhanced quality of life," Sonowal said.
The Minister also mentioned the government's initiatives, such as Waste to Wealth and Waste to Energy, which are crucial for addressing pollution at its source.
"Our city is a beautiful urban space, and we must take steps to prevent artificial flooding. Scientific measures are essential for the swift drainage of floodwaters. Blessed with natural bounty, we must act to preserve it for future generations. Initiatives like Waste to Wealth and Waste to Energy, launched by the Modi government, are vital for tackling pollution. Today's meeting is a step towards advocating for a greener, healthier, and happier Dibrugarh," Sonowal added. (ANI)
