Southwest monsoon hits Kerela

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the deep depression, the remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, currently centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, has moved northwards at a speed of 10 kmph in the past six hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts, as Cyclonic Storm Ditwah continues its northward trajectory over the southwest Bay of Bengal, steadily moving closer to the shoreline.

Cyclonic storm Ditwah is advancing north-northwestwards in the southwest Bay of Bengal, with a red alert in place for north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, prompting precautionary measures.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, IMD Director General of Meteorology Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the cyclonic storm is presently centred over coastal areas of Sri Lanka and adjoining parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal, around 480 km south of Chennai, and is moving in a north-northwestward direction.

Strong winds, heavy rain and rough sea conditions hit Pamban city on Thursday as Cyclone 'Ditwah' moved north-northwest across Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal.

The Meteorological department in Chennai on Friday issued an alert regarding Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, stating that the cyclonic storm, which is centred over coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, has moved north-northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph since the past six hours.

The system, which has intensified with strong winds and the potential for extremely heavy rainfall, is expected to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near the North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early morning of November 30.

The IMD scientist provided weather updates for various regions of the country, stating that due to a western disturbance over central Pakistan and nearby areas, a cyclone-like situation is developing in southwest Rajasthan. However, the IMD Scientist does not anticipate any significant changes in the weather for northwest India.

The system, which moved northwestward from off the north coast of Sri Lanka, was centred near the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is likely to intensify into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, during the next 12 hours. It is expected to move inland across northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh within the next 12 hours.

The severe cyclonic storm "Shakhti" over the northwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea moved west-southwestwards at 15 kmph, centred at 1130 hrs IST on October 5, 2025, near latitude 20.8°N and longitude 61.0°E, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
