Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 3 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Saumitra Khan wrote to Union law minister Arjun Meghwal requesting to take immediate action to improve the law and order situation in West Bengal.
He also urged the union minister to take appropriate action against the Kolkata Police Commissioner for failing to maintain the justice system effectively.
"As you may be aware, on August 9th, a horrific incident occurred at RG Medical College in Kolkata, where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered. This shocking event has outraged people from all walks of life across the country, leading to protests by students in Kolkata and various other states" read the letter.
He stated that the law and order situation in West Bengal has deteriorated since August 9.
"Respected Minister, I regret to inform you that since August 9, 2024, the law and order situation in West Bengal has deteriorated significantly. The Kolkata Police Commissioner has consistently failed to address this incident effectively" the letter added.
He also accused that the Kolkata police commissioner responded to protestors by resorting to firing, lathi charges, tear gases and water cannons.
"Police Commissioner responded with oppressive measures such as firing, lathi charges, tear gas, and water cannons against our promising youth. Furthermore, there are concerns that the police may have tampered with or attempted to destroy evidence related to the incident" the letter added.
He urged the union law minister to take immediate action to improve the law and order situation in West Bengal and take appropriate measures against Kolkata Police Commissioner.
"I request that you take immediate action to improve the situation of justice and law enforcement in West Bengal and take appropriate measures against the Kolkata Police Commissioner for failing to maintain the justice system effectively. Given the ongoing violations and destruction of constitutional norms, Act 355 should be enforced in West Bengal" the letter noted.
Notably, a trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
