Smart Cities project will change face of Nagpur: Gadkari

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], Feb 2 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that the Centre's flagship initiative -- Smart Cities project will change the face of Nagpur, as funds allocated under the scheme are being used to develop the city's amenities and improve infrastructure.

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], Feb 2 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that the Centre's flagship initiative -- Smart Cities project will change the face of Nagpur, as funds allocated under the scheme are being used to develop the city's amenities and improve infrastructure.
Addressing an event here, Gadkari, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Nagpur said: "Under the Smart Cities project, 52 kilometer of roads are being built, 29 bridges are under construction, 7,000 LED lights will be installed, dedicated cycle tracks will be marked on major roads and 24-hour water supply. All of these projects will be completed in 18 months and facilities will be developed as per international standards."
He underlined that under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, around 5,000 people will get newly-constructed homes.
The Union minister also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Nagpur metro rail project, saying that work was almost complete and operations would commence soon.
Gadkari said that the drainage system, ecology, public amenities and environment will see improvements as well.
He asserted that the BJP government in Maharashtra had promised to give 50,000 jobs to the youth of Nagpur. He vowed that the government would provide 25,000 jobs to the youth in the next one year.
Gadkari went on to say that the poor and lower-class people residing in slum areas will be witnessing fast pace of development under the Smart Cities project.
Launched in 2015, the Smart Cities project aims to develop 100 cities across the country making them citizen-friendly and sustainable. (ANI)
