Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 2 (ANI): The Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Sunday strongly criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent "Pakistani agent" remark on Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi.
His remarks come after CM Sarma alleged Pakistani links of Gogoi through his British wife, with the chief minister reiterating the charges on Friday, and claimed that the Congress leader is a "Pakistani agent", planted by "foreign power", and that he had evidence to prove it.
"Gaurav Gogoi is a Pakistani agent. He is a pure Pakistani agent. If he has the courage, lodge a defamation case against me. What I have is the evidence, he is a 100 per cent Pakistani agent. He has been planted by a foreign power in our country. He is a planted person. I am saying this with facts. As a Chief Minister, I am saying that he is a pure Pakistani agent. After giving justice to Zubeen Garg, I will prove it," Sarma told reporters.
Reacting to this, Debabrata Saikia said to ANI, "Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is giving irresponsible statements and not taking adequate action against anti-India activities; he should be held accountable."
Meanwhile, Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will "run away" to Dubai or Singapore the very next day he loses power in the state.
Speaking to reporters here, Gogoi said that the allegations levelled by the Assam CM regarding him about a Pakistani agent were "ad nauseam and fictional". He slammed Sarma for not being able to produce evidence backing his allegations.
"Himanta Biswa Sarma has been repeating ad nauseam false, baseless, and fictional allegations about me since February this year. He has many times said that he will reveal all the facts on September 10. However, he has not given a shred of evidence to back his fictional claims. Therefore, his own credibility today is zero. The chief minister has repeatedly lied and misled people of Assam," Gogoi said.
The Assam Congress chief added that Sarma was in "constant fear" of losing power in the state since he would have to answer the public that he had "terrorised, intimidated, threatened, and arrested".
"I believe he is in a constant fear of losing power because he will have to answer to the public in the future. He won't have the Home Department to protect him. He is afraid to answer the people. In the future, he might have to run away and go to Dubai or Singapore, where his interests lie. Because he will not be able to face the justice demanded by the people of Assam," he said.
Gogoi asserted that Sarma will face justice of the people, but "won't be able to look them in the eye" Jail comes after the judge convicts. However, immediately after losing power, Himanta Biswa Sarma will have to be among the ordinary public. The public he has terrorised, intimidated, threatened, and arrested. He has forced people to sell their land and tea gardens. He will have to face the justice of the people," he said.
Earlier in May 2025, CM Sarma described Gogoi as a "deep-rooted Pakistani agent." The Assam Chief Minister claimed that Gogoi had only revealed 10 per cent about his visit to Pakistan and that he and his wife are deeply involved in anti-India activities.
Refuting the Congress MP's clarification on his visit to Pakistan, Sarma said that his visit to the neighbouring country had nothing to do with his wife's professional assignment and was an independent visit approved by the Interior Department of Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference, Sarma said, "This man (Gaurav Gogoi) is openly a deep-rooted Pakistani agent. No Assamese will ever forget the supreme sacrifice of Jintu Gogoi (an Indian Army officer who lost his life in the line of duty during the Kargil War) or the Pahalgam incident. No Assamese will be fine with justifying the visit to Pakistan."
"Whatever he (Gaurav Gogoi) has revealed is only 10 per cent. He and his wife are deeply involved in anti-India activities. His son was born in India and later got British citizenship. He surrendered his son's Indian passport. There are very serious allegations. I have documents to prove his wife's involvement in collecting Indian Intelligence input. I will reveal details on September 10," he said. (ANI)
