Patna (Bihar) [India], June 29 (ANI): Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal strongly criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College on Sunday and said that she is neither worried about the country nor the state.
He accused the TMC-led state government of arrogance and demanded fresh elections in Bengal.
While speaking to ANI, Jaiswal recalled the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case stating "What happened with the girl student in the medical college shook the whole of Bengal, but Mamata Banerjee did not learn anything from it."
"Mamata Banerjee's arrogance is increasing, and she is worried neither about the country nor of the State," he further said.
Calling for immediate political change in the state, the BJP leader demanded the dismissal of the current government and fresh polls. "Therefore, such a government should be deposed immediately, and this autocratic rule should be removed. Elections should be held again so that the people of that place can live freely," Jaiswal stated.
On June 25, a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gangraped by three men, including an alumnus of the college. The survivor claimed that the security guard failed to assist her during the incident. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including the security guard.
The incident that comes 10 months after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case has triggered a major political row in West Bengal.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a massive protest outside the Lalbazar Police Headquarters in Kolkata after West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was detained by the police on Saturday. Majumdar was released today from the Lal Bazaar police headquarters, following which he hit out at the West Bengal government, stating, "When the police sleep, someone has to wake up."
Majumdar had been taken into custody on Saturday while leading a protest against the alleged gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College. The protest was part of the BJP's statewide demonstrations demanding justice for the victim and criticising the Mamata Banerjee-led government for its alleged failure to ensure women's safety.
The BJP has formed a four-member investigation committee, led by party president JP Nadda, to probe the incident.
The committee will visit the crime scene and submit its report to Nadda. BJP leaders, including Majumdar, have demanded Mamata Banerjee's resignation, alleging that the accused have links with the Trinamool Congress.
The West Bengal government has faced criticism for its handling of the incident, with BJP leaders accusing the police of trying to shield the accused. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and urged a time-bound investigation. (ANI)
