Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], October 23 (ANI): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday condoled the death of Bishan Singh Bedi, the legendary Indian spinner and former captain of the Indian cricket team.
In a post on his X account, Badal said that the left-arm spinner mesmerised the world with his bowling skills and went on to enrich the game.
"Heartfelt condolences at the passing away of cricketing legend S. Bishan Singh Bedi. The left arm spinner mesmerised the world with his bowling skills and went on to enrich the game as a coach and mentor to budding cricketers. My thoughts are with his family. May Gurusahab grant them strength to bear this loss," the SAD chief said.
Bedi, considered as the country's greatest-ever left-arm spinner, died here after a prolonged illness.
The Amritsar-born spinner, who played domestically for Delhi, finished his career with 1,560 wickets in first-class cricket--more than any other Indian.
Bedi was part of Indian cricket's golden quartet of spinners, others being Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who formed the core of India's bowling unit for more than a decade between 1966 and 1978.
The legendary Indian spinner was known for his classical beauty of motion and ability to maintain a precise length over lengthy intervals while delicately altering his pace, trajectory, and release. At the time of his retirement, he was India's leading Test wicket-taker, with 266 wickets at an average of 28.71. (ANI)
