New Delhi (India), Mar 7 (ANI): India and Russia have signed a deal for leasing another nuclear submarine to the Indian Navy which is now expected to be delivered by 2025.
This would be the second Akula class nuclear submarine to be leased by the Indian Navy in the last 10 years.
“A deal worth around Rs 20,000 crore has been signed for the leasing of the third submarine which would be built at a Russian facility and is likely to be ready for delivery in next six years,” sources said here.
The negotiations in this regard had been completed about a month ago and the work on the project will start in Russia after the signing of the pact, sources said.
After the lease of the current INS Chakra in 2012, India had requested Russia to provide it with another boat of the same class.
India needs nuclear boats to get operational experience for operating the fleet of the Arihant-class submarines.
The first of the five Arihant class boats are operational in the Navy while the others are in the process of being built by the construction agencies. (ANI)
