Rohingya Muslims can be misled, exploited to destabilise region: Bangladesh envoy

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], September 20 (ANI): With Bangladesh struggling on front line of Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh's Ambassador to India Syed Muazzem Ali on Wednesday stated that there is a risk of some insurgents being misled and exploited to destabilise the region.

Ambassador's remarks came a day after the Indian Government, in its affidavit to the Supreme Court, said that the presence of Rohingya Muslims in India is a serious security threat to the country.

Speaking to ANI, Syed Muazzem Ali said, "Fraction of number of people can fall into hands of evil doers who can exploit them for de-stabilising region. Presence of displaced people of this size and dimension in our region is a cause of concern for everybody. It is India's internal matter. Don't want to comment on it. Also, many Rohingya Muslims are being misled and exploited to destabilise the region."

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's Ambassador to India also thanked the Indian Government for Operation Insaniyat, which has provided assistance to Bangladesh in response to humanitarian crisis.

Under this operation, India is providing relief material consisting of items including rice, sugar, salt, pulses, cooking oil, biscuits and mosquito nets to the affected people.

Earlier in the week, former attorney general Mukul Rohatgi asserted that the Rohingya issue is a matter of foreign policy and not the one that can be "judicially reviewed".

However, the government told the Supreme Court that many Rohingya refugees have links with the Islamic State and Pakistan's spy agency ISI, as it sought to win legal backing to deport tens of thousands of them for being a "serious security threat" to India.

The government's argument was in response to a petition filed by two Rohingya refugees challenging any Indian decision to deport an estimated 40,000 people of the community who fled alleged persecution in Myanmar.

The United Nations said that there are 16,000 registered Rohingya in India, but many more are undocumented. (ANI)
