New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Sunday reviewed the impact of Cyclone Remal which claimed three dozen lives and affected more than two lakh people across the northeastern states due to flash floods, heavy rains, and landslides.
In a press release by the Prime Minister's Office, Narendra Modi was briefed about the impact of the cyclone on the affected states during the meeting.
"The loss of human lives and damage to houses and properties due to landslides and floods in Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura was also discussed. NDRF teams have been deployed as per the needs. The teams have carried out evacuation, airlifting and road clearance operations," the press release added.
During the meeting, it was mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs is in regular touch with the State Governments.
Assuring support to the affected states by the Centre, the PM said that the Government of India will continue to extend full support to the State affected by the cyclone. "The PM also instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor the situation and review the matter regularly to extend necessary assistance for restoration," the press release said.
The Principal Secretary to the PM, Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, DG NDRF and Member Secretary, NDMA alongwith other senior officials from PMO and concerned Ministries were also present in the meeting.
According to government sources, PM Modi will also hold some more meetings on a wide range of topics, including a brainstorming session to review the agenda for the new government's first 100 days.
He will hold a meeting to review the preparations to celebrate World Environment Day (June 5) on a large scale. Then he will hold a long brain-storming session to review the agenda for a 100-day program of the new government after the exit polls predicted a massive win for the BJP.
Continuous rainfall and landslides have isolated parts of the northeast, submerging railway tracks under floodwaters. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has cancelled express, passenger, and goods trains bound for south Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram since Tuesday due to inundated railway tracks throughout the region.
PM Modi earlier expressed grief over the situation in the northeastern states amid natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and assured all possible support. He said that the Centre is continuously monitoring the situation, and officials are working on the ground to assist those affected. (ANI)
