New Delhi [India], August 9 (ANI): Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar paid homage to freedom fighters on the 81st anniversary of the historic 'Quit India Movement' on Friday.
The decisive campaign against British rule was launched on this day in 1942 on Mahatma Gandhi's call at the Bombay session of the Congress on August 8 in his resounding clarion call of "Do or die" speech.
An alarmed British government arrested the top leadership of the Congress but people embraced Gandhi's call.
In his statement in the Upper House, he called on the members to reaffirm their commitment to uphold the sovereignty, and integrity and rededicate themselves for the service of Bharat.
Terming this an occasion for the Members of Parliament to introspect and reflect on their moral contributions, he asked them to rededicate with greater vigour to be in service of the nation, to realize the aspirations of the people at large and to secure a place of pride for Bharat in committee of nations.
Emphasizing that the call of 'Quit India' is even more relevant today in Amrit Kaal, the Vice President termed the movement as an epitome of what people are capable of achieving if they work together for a cause with determination and dedication.
Dhankhar highlighted the 'Do or Die' clarion call by Mahatma Gandhi stating that it "infused the masses with a new-found energy which culminated in the country achieving Independence from the yoke of colonial rule".
In his statement, the Rajya Sabha Chairman also recognized the post-independence endeavours aimed at alleviating poverty, promoting literacy, eradicating discrimination, and fostering social inclusivity. He underscored that the nation takes pride in the incremental progress achieved in these areas, as we stride towards our centenary celebrations in 2047.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to freedom fighters who participated in the 'Quit India Movement' led by Mahatma Gandhi.
PM Modi also emphasised the movement's significant role in India's struggle for independence from colonial rule.
"Homage to all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu's leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle," PM Modi said in a post on X. (ANI)
