Puri (Odisha) [India], October 4 (ANI): The BJP MP Sambit Patra highlighted the distinct cultural practices of Puri, particularly during the Vijayadashami celebrations. Unlike other parts of India, Puri observes the festival as Gosani Yatra, where idols of Goddess Durga, affectionately called Gosani, are worshipped with great fervour.
The Gosani Yatra is a blend of Shaivite, Shakta, and Vaishnavite traditions, reflecting Odisha's rich spiritual heritage.
He visited Puri on Friday, where he paid his respects to Lord Jagannath at the Srimandir temple. Standing in front of the iconic temple, Patra highlighted the significance of Badadanda, the road leading to the temple, known for being one of the widest and longest roads in India.
Patra wished for the blessings of Mahaprabhu Jagannath on this auspicious occasion, highlighting the importance of spiritual harmony and cultural preservation.
"I am standing in front of the Srimandir of Mahaprabhu Jagannath Ji, and this road in front of the Srimandir is called Badadanda. Meaning, the widest road in India and the world, the longest road. That is why it is called Badadanda. Yesterday, after Durga Puja, Vijayadashami was celebrated across India and the immersion festival of Maa Durga was celebrated. But Puri has a different culture. Its culture is very unique. Here it is called Gosani Yatra. Durga Maa, whom we lovingly call Gosani. All the mothers have come to Mahaprabhu Jagannath Ji as part of the Gosani Yatra, and they are all present here today...may Mahaprabhu Jagannath bless everyone on this auspicious occasion...," said Sambit Patra.
Around 70-80 Gosani idols are created in Puri, beautifully decorated and installed in pandals. The idols are taken in grand processions to pay homage to Lord Jagannath, accompanied by traditional music and dances.
Gosani Yatra is an integral part of Puri's folk culture, showcasing the city's unique blend of traditions and spiritual practices. The Gosani Yatra is not just a festival but a celebration of the divine connection between the community and their deity. (ANI)
