Puducherry: Former govt official sentenced to 5 years RI in bribery case

The Special Judge (Principal District and Sessions Judge) Puducherry on Wednesday sentenced accused S. Manivanna, a former assistant in the government of Puducherry, to five years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000 in a bribery case.

New Delhi [India], September 11 (ANI): The Special Judge (Principal District and Sessions Judge) Puducherry on Wednesday sentenced accused S. Manivanna, a former assistant in the government of Puducherry, to five years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000 in a bribery case, as per an official release.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had registered a case on July 31, 2014, against accused S. Manivannan, then Assistant, Puducherry Secretariat, on allegations that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 for processing and forwarding the Visa Extension of the complainant's mother to Foreigner's Registration Office at Karaikal, CBI stated in an official statement.
The ex-government official had asked the complainant to give the bribe on July 31, 2014, at his office, added the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The accused also threatened the complainant that if he did not give a bribe, the Visa Extension papers of the mother of the complainant would not be sent to the Foreigner's Registration Office.
According to CBI, a trap was laid and the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe amount of Rs 3,000 from the complainant.
After the completion of the investigation, a chargesheet was filed against the accused before the Special Court for PC Act cases, Puducherry, on October 14, 2014.
The Court, after trial, found the said accused guilty and sentenced him accordingly. (ANI)
