New Delhi [India], October 21 (ANI): Union Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday paid homage to the police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty on Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi.
"CRPF women bikers through Yashaswini (bike expedition) strengthened Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolution of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. I pay homage to the police personnel who made sacrifices on this Police Commemoration Day," she told ANI on Saturday.
Earlier, she flagged off the bike expedition of a group of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) women bikers at SDG grounds at the old JNU campus.
On October 21, 1959, ten valiant policemen laid down their lives in an ambush laid by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, as per a release by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In recognition of the sacrifices made by police personnel and their paramount role in preserving national security and integrity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial (NPM) in New Delhi to the nation on Police Commemoration Day in 2018.
October 21 is observed in commemoration of these fallen soldiers and of all other police personnel killed in line of duty, and homage is paid to police officers with the main function organised at the NPM, which is customarily presided over by the Home Minister.
Earlier today, on Police Commemoration Day in Delhi, a joint parade of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police was held. The Home Minister and other dignitaries paid homage to the soldiers by laying wreaths.
Speaking at the event, Amit Shah lauded the efforts of the police.
"In any nation, border security or internal security is not possible without an alert police force. I have observed that police duty is the toughest among all the people serving the country. In any weather or festival, a policeman is always on duty to maintain law and order. Whether it is terrorism, crime, or huge crowds, police have always been there to secure the lives of the common people. The police of our nation have always proved themselves on every point," the Home Minister said.
CAPFs and Central Police Organisations (CPOs) have organised various commemorative events at NPM from October 22 to 30, including visits of family members of soldiers who lost their lives, a police band display, motorcycle rallies, a run for fallen soldiers, a blood donation camp, essay and painting competitions, and the display of video films showcasing the sacrifice, valour, and service of police personnel.
