PNB scam: Employees stage protest outside Gitanjali's unit in Telangana

Ranga Reddy (Telangana) [India], Feb 20 (ANI): Employees of Gitanjali's unit in Maheshwaram Mandal's Raviryala in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana have staged a protest on Tuesday alleging that the company is not allowing them inside the premises.

The workers are even alleging that they are out of work.

During the protest, the employees were heard raising slogans of 'We want justice'.

Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently conducted a raid at this unit in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case involving businessman Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi.

The raids were even carried out on Hyderabad Gems SEZ Limited and four other units located at Raviryal in Maheswaram division of Ranga Reddy district.

Hyderabad Gems SEZ is a 100 percent subsidiary of Mehul Choksi-owned Gitanjali Group.

The ED had also conducted raids at multiple locations in different cities across the country.

The raids came after the agency filed a money laundering case against Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal and relative Mehul Choksi on February 14, following a complaint by the PNB.

The agency has filed the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on the basis of an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) early this month.

The PNB detected scam in which jeweller Nirav Modi acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking from one of its branches for overseas credit from other Indian lenders.

The scam was started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials filed a complaint with the CBI on January 31. (ANI)
