New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): On World Environment Day Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign.
Under this campaign, he has urged people to plant a sapling in the upcoming days as a tribute to their mothers.
The Prime Minister planted a peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in the national capital today. He was accompanied by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
He also requested participants to share a picture of themselves planting the sapling using the hashtags #Plant4Mother
"Today, on World Environment Day, delighted to start a campaign," he posted on X.
"I call upon everyone, in India and around the world, to plant a tree in the coming days as a tribute to your mother. Do share a picture of you doing so using #Plant4Mother," PM said in a post on X.
PM also highlighted the need to protect the environment and shared his tree-planting experience, encouraging others to follow suit.
"This morning, I planted a tree in line with our commitment to protecting Mother Nature and making sustainable lifestyle choices. I urge you all to also contribute to making our planet better," PM said in another post.
PM Modi also highlighted the collective efforts made by India over the past decade, which have resulted in an increase in the nation's forest cover.
"It would make you all very happy that in the last decade, India has undertaken numerous collective efforts which have led to increased forest cover across the nation. This is great for our quest towards sustainable development. It is also commendable how local communities have risen to the occasion and taken a lead in this," PM Modi said in another post on X.
World Environment Day, observed on June 5, marks the start of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. This year's theme is "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience". (ANI)
