Phase 2 of Gaganshakti exercise begins, IAF to focus on maritime targets

New Delhi [India], Apr. 18 (ANI): Phase two of Indian Air Force's (IAF) combat mission Gaganshakti 2018 has begun with the focus on addressing maritime targets in conjunction with Indian Navy.

In this current phase, maritime targets over the Eastern Sea Board will be addressed right up to the Malacca Strait.

According to an official statement, "The full complement of Maritime Assets would now operate from bases in the Southern peninsula and Andaman and Nicobar islands."

Extensive sorties would be carried out by Su-30 MKI and Jaguar in conjunction with the Indian Navy's P-8I using long-range weapons to refine and practice offensive and defensive tactics against maritime targets.

In the initial phase Su-30 and Jaguar fighter aircraft equipped with the potent Brahmos and Harpoon Anti-ship missiles to address both near and in-depth targets over the Western and Eastern Sea Boards.

The Su-30 showcased its strategic reach by operating from the easternmost air bases on the peninsula and engaging maritime targets well out into the western seaboard with the support of FRA (Flight Refueling Aircraft).

Gaganshakti is showcasing the air dominance over the entire extended area of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The pan India synergised exercise will showcase the multi-spectrum capabilities, both offensive and defensive. The IAF will conduct all terrain operations- desert, high altitude, maritime scenarios and special operations- in the real time.

Gagan Shakti exercise will go on till April 23. (ANI)
