New Delhi [India], August 14 (ANI): A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking the cancellation of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) election and the appointment of a one-man committee by the court.
The petition also demands that Sanjay Singh be barred from conducting any further selections.
Sanjay Singh, who was elected as the WFI president in 2023, is viewed as an aide of former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Senior advocate Rahul Mehra, representing wrestler Bajrang Punia and others, told ANI, "This is a writ petition filed on behalf of Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh, and others in the lead-up to the Olympic Games."
Advocate Mehra added, "The petition seeks relief against the proxy of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the current WFI President, Sanjay Singh, has been making unauthorised and illegal decisions without any mandate."
Questioning the decisions made by a suspended Federation president regarding trial selections, Advocate Mehra further stated, "A suspended Federation president should not have been making any decisions. However, he continued to do so, even going so far as to procure letters to influence the court's proceedings. We sought a complete severance between the WFI, headed by Sanjay Singh, and the World Body, as well as the International Olympic Committee, given the upcoming Olympic Games."
He also mentioned that the petition calls for the appointment of a one-man committee.
Advocate Mehra added, "We also requested that Sanjay Singh and other office bearers be prohibited from conducting any further selections and that a one-man committee be appointed by the court. The matter was heard for 2.5 months, with the decision reserved on May 24, which is now being announced today." (ANI)
