Petition filed before SC to mandate two-child norm for poll candidates

New Delhi [India], Feb 9 (ANI): A petition was filed before the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Centre for making "two-child norm" mandatory for contesting elections, availing government jobs, aids and subsidies.
The apex court has admitted the petition and the matter is likely to come up for hearing in the last week of February.
Two-child norm for contesting local body election has already been adopted by some states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Haryana, which has yielded very positive results in reducing the population growth in those states, the petition filed by advocate and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay stated.
Therefore, such a two-child norm should be adopted by all the states to implement the population control policy to bring fruitful results, Upadhyay further claimed in his petition.
The petition said that people representatives are not only public servants but also law-maker, hence, they should set an example for others for adopting two child norms so that common people of the country can be encouraged to emulate two child norms.
The PIL by Upadhyaya has also sought rising of the minimum age of marriage to 21 years for male and female. Presently, it is 18 years for female and 21years for a male.
It is worth to mention here that recently the Supreme Court pulled up advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay for filing a series of 'meaningless' Public Interest Litigations (PILs) and warned that he might be banned from filing PILs in the future. (ANI)
