Panaji (Goa) [India], April 21 (ANI): Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Fr Walter De Sa, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, remembering him as a remarkable spiritual leader and a tireless advocate for peace, unity, and compassion.
Speaking to ANI, Walter De Sa said that Pope Francis championed interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and the dignity of every human being.
"It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of our beloved Pope Francis, who left for his heavenly abode this morning at around 7:35," Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Fr Walter De Sa, said.
"He was a remarkable leader and a tireless advocate for peace, harmony, and unity among all people... Just before his passing, he appeared at St. Peter's Square to wish the faithful a heartfelt "Happy Easter," a gesture that touched millions and symbolized his enduring love for the Church and all humanity," he added.
He described Pope Francis' spirituality as deeply rooted in his intimate union with Jesus and a profound devotion to Mother Mary.
"Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis championed interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, and the dignity of every human being... His spirituality ran deep, rooted in his intimate union with Jesus and a profound devotion to Mother Mary... As we bid farewell to this extraordinary shepherd, we believe he now rests in the embrace of the Lord, having heard the words: "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Let us honour his legacy by continuing his mission of love, unity, and care for creation," he added.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, the Vatican announced. He had a day ago celebrated Easter and given his customary Easter address in the Vatican square.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was ordained a priest in 1969. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, he was elected as the 266th Pope on March 13, 2013. He chose the name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
After a nine-day mourning period known as the Novendiale, the process of choosing the next pope begins.
The next pope will be chosen by a College of Cardinals, the Catholic church's most senior figures appointed by the pontiff, in Rome in the next few days for the conclave. As of April 19, there are 252 cardinals from over 70 countries, of whom 135 are eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a new pope. (ANI)
