Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) [India], November 10 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Sunday said that the state government will not tolerate "threats" against police officers, adding that the government will take suo motu cognizance of such threats.
His remarks come after YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy's statment that a future YSRCP government would not spare police officials who harass opposition party members.
"The coalition government will not tolerate threats against on-duty police officers. If any further warnings are issued to officials, we will take suo-motu action and file cases," Pawan Kalyan said while speaking at the Forest Martyrs Remembrance Ceremony held at the Guntur Aranya Bhavan.
He criticized the remarks by the former Chief Minister allegedly aimed at IPS officers, saying such statements would be taken up suo-motu. Pawan Kalyan further added that officials on duty will not be intimidated by such threats.
He alleged that during the previous YSRCP government, the police were pressured into serious missteps, with cases filed even against women protesters. While in the opposition, they had never threatened to settle scores but rather called for responsibility. Criticizing the behaviour of the former Chief Minister, he highlighted that it is inappropriate for someone in such a position to threaten officers.
Addressing the audience, Pawan Kalyan said, "The former Chief Minister is heard saying that even if the Tirupati District SP Subbarayudu is overseas, he won't be left alone; similar threats have been made about the DGP even after retirement. Our coalition government will not tolerate threats against on-duty officers. Unlike the previous administration, we do not pressure the police into wrongful actions. Critics sit at home and say the state is unsafe for women, but these issues don't start now. During the previous government, attacks on women were frequent, and political leaders made careless statements, even threatening harm to family members."
Pawan Kalyan said that to prevent crimes against women, there must first be social awareness.
"If I witness any woman being harmed, I will not stand by. Police should also not treat complainants as criminals. Recently, in Kakinada, a woman donated her son's organs after he was declared brain-dead following an accident. Police should respond sensitively, and people should be encouraged to report crimes without fear of being troubled by authorities," he said.
He emphasized that no matter how many laws are made, results depend on the commitment of those enforcing them. Referring to Singapore, he called for strict punishments and mentioned that criminals have no caste or religion. He stated, "We cannot allow criminals to hide behind caste or religion; anyone who commits a crime should be punished." (ANI)
